Wootch is a child locator hidden inside of a watch

by - on July 31st, 2013

Being a parent is a lot of work. There are times where you need a few extra hands, and another pair of eyes. Unfortunately, if you don’t have anyone else around, extra appendages are hard to come by. Thankfully, there are plenty of gadgets out there that can help with some of the issues that can come up while trying to raise a child (or two).

If you’ve ever taken your child out to the store, and lost sight of them, you truly understand what it means to panic. Despite being a good parent and keeping constant watch over them, children can disappear around a corner in the blink of an eye. This type of scenario is exactly what the Wootch was created.

The Wootch looks like nothing more than a brightly-colored digital watch for children. However, it’s more than just a portable timepiece. The watch also houses a Bluetooth transmitter that will talk to your smartphone, and let you know exactly where your child is. Should they get more than 16 feet away, you will actually get an alert on your phone, letting you know that they’ve wandered off too far. Finally, there’s a “FindMe” button, that your child can press, that sends an alert to your phone.

I think that this concept is brilliant. Sure, some people will say that good parents won’t ever lose track of their children, but those people are simply underestimating how sneaky a kid can really be. What I think is so great is that the device is hidden in plain sight as a watch. All you need to do is get your child in the habit of wearing their watch whenever you take them out of the house. And should the worst happen and someone abducts a child wearing one of these, they won’t think to remove the watch, so there’s a better chance of the child hitting the “FindMe” button, and being found quickly. You can get your own by funding the IndieGoGo project, and pledging just $30.

Sports Analyst’s Camcorder

by - on July 28th, 2013

When it comes to sports, I really admire those photographers who have fantastic equipment to go along with their skill â€" especially when they capture those immortal moments of sporting glory, such as Muhammad Ali knocking someone out, or Mike Tyson biting Evander’s ear off. How about Roger Federer picking up his first French Open title? Well, if you are your son’s biggest fan on the soccer field, then you might want to get the $1,200 Sports Analyst’s Camcorder as part of your parenthood arsenal â€" after all, you would not want to miss your son’s match winning goal, do you?

Not only that, regaling such a tale to your family and friends are not going to make the cut, unless they see for themselves. This is what the Sports Analyst’s Camcorder does â€" it will be able to capture slow motion video, while sending it sans wires to a tablet computer, and coaches and athletes are able to analyze the performance. Of course, parents with dough to spare can do that, too, as mom records the young tyke, while dad does the analysis. This camcorder is capable of shooting high-speed video at up to 600 frames-per-second, sporting a 900% higher frame rate compared to your everyday camcorder, with the ability to play back super slow motion video that makes it useful to know where one has gone wrong in a golf swing, ball kick, or baseball pitch. Hardware underneath the hood includes a back-illuminated 1/2.3″ 12.8 megapixel CMOS image sensor and a wide angle F1.2 lens, 10X optical zoom, optical image stabilization, and the ability to record video in 1920 x 1080p high-definition video at 60 fps.

ROCCAT Studios announces optical Kone Pure gaming mouse

by - on July 27th, 2013

For those who have been in the PC gaming scene for more than a decade already, you would know that when it comes to high end gaming peripherals, serious gamers basically do not compromise with the kind of equipment that they use. ROCCAT Studios is one of the big league names, where this Hamburg-based manufacturer of competition gaming peripherals has just announced the immediate availability of the optical version of its award-winning Kone Pure gaming mouse.

Yes sir, at long last, this latest addition to the ROCCAT Studios gaming mice family would mean there is a Kone Pure available regardless of your preference â€" if you want the maxed out DPI of a laser mouse, there is something for you, whle others who prefer the unique feel of an optical sensor gliding over their mousepad, will also have something to smile about. The Kone Pure Optical is said to merge the design innovations and ergonomic shape of original Kone Pure, measuring roughly 91% the size of the Kone, while boasting of an ultra-accurate, cutting-edge Pro-Optic optical sensor.

Not only that, the Kone Pure optical gaming mouse will also come equipped with high-quality Omron switches, in addition to ROCCAT innovations such as Easy-Shift[+], Easy-Aim, and ROCCAT Talk, and a high-end sensor that has an adjustable DPI of up to true 4,000 DPI.

Satechi Desk Mat & Mate offers an alternative workspace

by - on July 27th, 2013

They say that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, but what happens when Jack wants to work in a serious manner, but those around Jack do not actually give him the chance to work in peace and silence? I suppose Jack will have to change jobs, or at least lay down some house rules. Working from home might have its fair share of perks, but the downside would be this â€" a lack of discipline might end up as a major distraction. Well, Satechi intends to help out those who happen to ply their trade from the comfort of their own home with the Satechi Desk Mat & Mate.

The Satechi Desk Mat & Mate is said to be the perfect workspace accessory for adults and children alike, where you can choose from eight different and fun colors in order to have it match any aesthetic and décor. The main purpose of the Desk Mat & Mate would be to have it protect any surface area from scratches and spills (something that is extremely common when it comes to little kids with their stationery, or clumsy adults), all the while doubling up as comfortable resting surface for your hands â€" making it the ideal platform when you write, type, use the mouse, or color.

It will measure 24.4” x 13.8”, ensuring that it does its bit to cover a relatively large surface area so that you should not run into any issues fitting your keyboard and mouse, while paving the way for a smooth transition between devices to enjoy a steady workflow throughout the day. It is made out of synthetic leather, where the smooth surface itself can be easily wiped down, while offering a decent amount of protection to the desk from scratches, dents and every day wear and tear. The asking price for the Satechi Desk Mat & Mate would be $34.99 a pop, where you can choose form blue, green, black, brown, orange, pink, purple or white shades.

Rubbee electrifies any standard bicycle

by - on July 26th, 2013

There are a lot of ways to get around, especially if you live in the city. You can walk, drive, take public transportation, and of course, bike. Oftentimes, the last option can be one of the best ones. It’s quick, you don’t have to wait on someone else’s schedule, and you don’t have to pay for gas. There are downsides, like dealing with inclement weather, and making sure you have the energy to get to your destination without working up a sweat. While you can’t really do much about the weather, you can make sure that you get from Point A to Point B without expending much energy at all.

Electric bikes aren’t a new concept. There are plenty on the market that you can buy, but the selection isn’t as vast as if you were shopping for a regular bicycle. So what if you could transform your favorite two-wheeler into an electric-powered one? That’s exactly what the Rubbee intends to do.

This device quickly and easily attaches to the seat tube of your bike, while the friction wheel sits on top of your rear wheel. Steady force is maintained as it spins, causing your tire to also move. It uses a special polyurethane formula that is supposed to provide maximum grip on the wheel, and eliminate any grinding that would wear away the rubber. There is also a throttle that you will attach to your handlebars, for controlling your speed.

The unit can provide enough juice to take you up to 15 miles on a single charge, and enough power to get you up to 15 mph. As for charging, you’ll only need to plug in the unit for 2 hours to get a full charge. Currently, you can pre-order your own Rubbee for around $1070.

HolograFX brings Star Wars-like holograms to your home

by - on July 25th, 2013

It’s fascinating to see how many technologies from science fiction have become reality. Sure, there are some things like hyperdrives and lightsabers that are still ahem light years away. But there are some that we keep getting closer and closer to, such as holograms. Sure, we’ve got plenty of things that we call holograms, but what we really want is that image of Princess Leia that Luke and Obi-Wan watched in the original Star Wars movie. Well, it looks like we might just be one step closer to that.

HolograFX is a new children’s toy that projects a free-standing hologram onto a flat surface. That’s right, you can pass your hand through it, just as in Star Wars. And yes, you capture your own moving image to be used. So put on your best Princess Leia outfit, and record your message to Obi-Wan. Unfortunately, the projection is 2D, so it’s not quite up to par yet, but it is in full color. This cool effect is actually just one part of a larger set of illusions for kids to perform for their friends and family. There is even a story mode for them to go through, if they want to play by themselves.

So how do they get this technology to work? Well, it actually uses a technique known as Pepper’s Ghost, which has been around for a while. This means that there is likely a clear film of some sort that you’re looking through, that allows the projection to be seen. You’ll need an iPhone or Android device to use it, as there is a companion app that controls everything. This is also what you will use if you want to project yourself as a holographic image. This neat toy will only set you back $35 if you pre-order it on RocketHub.

Cutaway Enterprise Model lets you see what’s under the hood of your favorite starship

by - on July 24th, 2013

If you were a geeky kid growing up in the 60′s, you probably fell in love with a certain Sci-Fi show called Star Trek. While it wasn’t the first space adventure to be aired, this five-year mission (that only aired for 3) managed to capture a spirit that had never been seen before. And now, nearly half a century later, kids and adults alike are still wishing that they could sit in the captain’s chair and chase down some Klingons. Well, if you count yourself among these, then I have something interesting for you to look at today.

While you aren’t going to sit yourself down in the same chair that Kirk did, you will get a very unique look at the original USS Enterprise. While there have been plenty of toys and models in the past, this is definitely one of the more unique ones offered. Rather than just seeing the grey exterior hull, you’ll notice that some areas are covered by clear plastic. Through this you can see various details about the original ship. Unfortunately you can’t see the entirety of the ship, but rather just the areas that have already been replaced with clear plastic.

The Star Trek Enterprise Cutaway Model measures 18” long, and stands 8” high. As you might imagine, something with this much detail work is an officially licensed product. This bit of Star Trek fandom is indeed licensed, and it has the price tag to prove it. If you’ve always wanted to get an up-close and personal look at the inner workings of a starship, then this $175 item may be exactly what you need. Just remember, when anyone asks, it’s a “collector’s item” and not a “toy”.

Ness – Tells You Where You Want to Eat, and Why

by Julie - on April 18th, 2013

He says “So what are we going to do tonight?” “I dunno, let’s go eat.” she says. “Where should we go?” he asks. To which the reply is quite often “I cant think of anywhere, you decide.” Does that sound familiar? It seems like every weekend we end up in the same old place and to be honest, if I do stray from our old haunts its usually a disappointing experience. There have actually been times we didn’t go anywhere simply because we couldn’t come up with anything that sounded fun.

Well, I haven’t really tried it yet, but I’d like to introduce you to Ness, made exclusively for your iPhone or iPod touch, Ness will anticipate what your dining needs may be, and present you with elegant, swipeable recommendation cards that will summarize the information you need to quickly find a restaurant you will love.  Much better than a husband… it learns what you like, then picks a restaurant and tells you why you’ll like it!

The developers tell us, Ness adapts to your tastes to provide instant recommendations for you, not the crowd. So here’s an app that looks out for what you like, and even exactly when you might like it.  It can actually tell you a great place for brunch, or a great late night snack. So with a couple of swipes you can see a pic of the place, know about how much and how far and be on your way… or save the recommendation for later.

So, in the interest of marital bliss, I’m trying Ness out this weekend, and I may just find a couple of new places to relax with a good meal. I’ll let you know how it goes. Checkout Ness for yourself, its free and available at the app store.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 unveiled

by - on July 21st, 2013

There are digital cameras, and then there are digital cameras. It is quite a large topic to cover, and so, there are just too many different branches to cover in a single article. Still, the digital camera market is pretty much broken down into three segments â€" the compact digital camera, the DSLR, and the Micro Four Thirds market. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 can be said to occupy the first category, although it would be in a pretty niche segment, too, as optically speaking, the DMC-FZ70 is capable of delivering an amazing 20mm wide-angle to 1,200mm (60X) long zoom. Not only that, with F2.8-5.9 lens brightness, it does not matter whether you are shooting video or photos, either one will appear bright even under low light conditions.

Apart from that, the inclusion of optical image stabilization would assure that both long zoom photos and videos will remain sharp and free from blur, while the DMC-FZ70 also delivers amazing Full HD 1080/60i video recording capability, courtesy of Panasonic’s experience as a world leader in professional broadcast video. Panasonic has also thrown in a unique microphone which will do away with ambient noise and wind sound thanks to the stunning clarity of Dolby Digital. In fact, this special microphone can even zoom with the optical zoom in order to zero in on the audio coming from your subject in a more precise manner.

Underneath the hood, you will find a new 16.1-megapixel high sensitivity MOS sensor and Venus engine that delivers high speed response and high picture quality, even in high sensitivity recording. This does ensure it is able to perform high speed burst shooting at 9 fps in full resolution, letting you capture the most fleeting shooting opportunities together thanks to a speedy start-up time of under a second. Unfortunately for the world, pricing and availability details remain to be seen, and we hope that it will be easy on the pockets!

ChargeLight does more than just light up your world

by - on July 21st, 2013

It is said that every home should own a torchlight of their own, at least a couple would be good, as you can never quite tell just when you will need to “call” upon it. Of course, there is also the issue of ensuring that you have the right amount of batteries (as well as size) to go along with those torchlights, otherwise it would be about as effective as an ordinary paperweight. This is one of the reasons why those hand cranked torchlights are pretty popular, although after a while, the internal battery sort of dies and cannot hold a charge any more â€" making it unfit for use unless there are two people around â€" one to crank it, and the other to work with his/her hands. Not only that, it emits a fair amount of noise which is bound to attract attention in a zombie apocalypse, and that is a huge no-no. This is where the ChargeLight comes in handy.

The ChargeLight comes with a couple of tools on offer which are essential to our connected lives, namely power and light. This is an elegant, portable LED flashlight that not only provides light, but it also has the capability to double up as a battery pack for just about any USB device, and these will include the iPhone, iPad, and Android-powered devices among others. Not only that, it will come in a lightweight form factor that is also sleek, making it a snap to tote around in your pocket or purse, without having to worry that there is a possibility of dead batteries coming into the picture.

The ChargeLight has an extremely low internal discharge rate, where it is capable of lasting over a year without having to be juiced up. LED lights will show off just how much battery life there is left, letting you know when you have power, and making it easy to check at a glance. You can charge it via the included dock or use a USB adaptor, whichever floats your boat. Oh yeah, the dock itself is also a charging hub for multiple devices simultaneously. You can choose between 100%, 50% and 10% light power based on your needs, and it is up for pre-order at $99.99 a pop, with shipping to commence this September.

New Trent Airbender Mini now available

by - on July 19th, 2013

So, you have decided to pick up a spanking new iPad mini for yourself, and want to take all the necessary precautions to ensure that it remains as scratch free as possible, at least until the next generation iPad mini arrives, so that you can sell off your current iPad mini at the highest price possible? That is definitely a thought, but I prefer to look at gadgets this way â€" it is always best to maximize its purpose, and if it involves using said device without any protective case or screen protector so that it will not sully the efforts made by the device’s designers, then so be it, never mind the fact that there is the very real possibility of me introducing the concept of scratches to my shiny new device. Well, the New Trent Airbender Mini sort of brings the best of both worlds, and it also ups the productivity ante for iPad mini owners, too.

Basically, the New Trent Airbender Mini has been touted to be the ideal portable case solution for those who want maximum protection for their iPad mini, regardless of where they are, whether they are at home, in the office or in the great outdoors. The outdoors? Yup, that is correct, this bad boy will come with a shock and splash resistant case, thanks to a rubberized exterior which will ensure that all openings are properly plugged, all the while offering full-body protection to the iPad mini without hindering usability.

Not only that, it comes with the convenience of a removable iPad mini case that has an integrated screen protector, ensuring that scratches and smudges will never get to your beloved iPad mini, all without sacrificing on touch screen sensitivity. Sporting an ultra low-profile, built-in keyboard, it will hook up to the iPad mini via Bluetooth, ensuring you can type out all those documents in a jiffy, with great ease and comfort. If you are interested, the New Trent Airbender Mini can be yours for $39.95 a pop.

HTC launches HTC One mini

by - on July 19th, 2013

Every single company would do well to release a flagship device of their own â€" it is not only a matter of technological achievement, but one of pride as well. After all, what is the point of tooting your trumpet if you do not have a flagship that is capable of duking it out with the best of the rest out there? HTC knows that they have a winner with the HTC One on their hands in the recent past, where it has picked up mainly rave reviews from the masses as well as the press, but still, the HTC One was unable to help HTC deliver a stellar quarter when it comes to earnings. Having said that, this has not stopped HTC from moving in the right direction, and they have just announced the HTC One mini, keeping in vein with the “mini me” theme that smartphone manufacturers, Samsung especially, just love to play with these days.

The HTC One mini is said to be HTC’s ultimate 4.3” smartphone, after all, it does come with HTC BlinkFeed, HTC Zoe and HTC BoomSound, all features that are available on their HTC One flagship, too. The HTC One mini would continue in the same iconic design flow of the HTC One, where you will find that the 4.3” display is easy on the eyes, while a powerful dual-core 1.4 GHz processor helps run proceedings from underneath the hood. Not only that, it will also be powered by the most recent version of the Android operating system, where it will be accompanied by HTC Sense.

Coming in Glacial Silver and Stealth Black colors, the HTC One mini boasts of a striking aluminum unibody in a slim profile, looking premium regardless of which angle you’re starting it down from. Not only that, there is also HTC BoomSound, which is HTC’s dual frontal stereo speakers that deliver less distortion and finer detail, and headphone lovers will love the Beats Audio integration that delivers immersive audio to the next level. It remains to be seen just how much the HTC One mini will sell for, but it is tipped to arrive in select markets from August onwards, before a global rollout in September.

The Chillsner – Coolest BEER Gadget

by Julie - on June 3rd, 2013

I think everyone but me is looking forward to summer. I mean, I’d like summer if all I had to do was relax poolside and swill a few beers… but even that’s not as much fun as it could be, with a sweaty little beer bottle warming itself in the sun. Beer has gotta be cold. Really cold. What’s a girl to do?

Check out the Chillsner, made by the same folks that brought us the Corkcicle, the Chillsner is the first ever drink-through beer bottle chiller. You simply grab your Chillsner and freeze it for around 45 minutes, suffer through a sip of your lukewarm beverage (in order to make room for the Chillsner) and insert the frozen wand into your beer, making sure to form a tight seal… and voila! A frosty cold brew.

The Chillsner is made of stainless steel, with a proprietary cooling gel and it contains specially designed flow vents in order for your beer delivery to be smoother, colder and more consistent. The sturdy seal allows for an airtight connection, so you can drink without dribbling, and they come in sets of two, so you can freeze one, use one, in a never ending cycle of frosty goodness.

The Chillsner is great for backyard barbecues and picnics, for impromptu get togethers or just for people like me, who like their beer as cold as you can possibly get it without it being an ice pop. So get set for summer and grab a set for under 30 buck over at amazon.com. Hmm.. beer ice pops, am I onto something here? Didn’t think so.

Big Button Phone

by - on April 3rd, 2013

Sure, growing old gracefully has its fair share of benefits, where among them include half price discounts when it comes to the little things in life such as dinner at a restaurant in certain places, or perhaps even when you are flying. Well, the price to pay for some might be failing health, as the internal organs start to wind down, while other senses of the body such as hearing and sight begin to fail, too. Hence, it is not surprising to see seniors walk around with hearing aids as well as a pair of glasses, and if you think that your ocular abilities are starting to be shaky, perhaps it is time to make sure the stuff around your home, too, will be able to keep up with your, er, degeneration, for the lack of a better word.

Since the telephone is one of the more useful tools at home, I guess you cannot really go wrong with the $49.95 Big Button Phone, where it works just as it is named â€" carrying extremely large buttons on the phone itself. The numbers on these buttons will also be raised for a Braille effect as well as easy dialing. There are three programmable “one-push” buttons that help you summon fire, police or medical help, in addition to other features including a speakerphone, 13-number memory, last number redial, visual ringer indicator, and volume controls for both the ringer (up to 90dB) and the handset. Heck, it will play nice with your hearing aid, assuming you wear one, and works even during power outages thanks to its power reserves.

Samsung Ultra HD TV range sees new F9000 series added

by - on July 14th, 2013

Are you currently on the lookout for a spanking new TV to fill up that empty space in your living room? If you have answered in the affirmative, then I am quite sure that you would have considered getting an Ultra High Definition TV before the missus shot down your suggestion. Well, one can always hope, no? Perhaps if you dimmed the lights, put on some candles around the dining table with her favorite tune playing in the background, and let her have a look at what Samsung has in store (with her favorite dessert just “coincidentally” sitting by the notebook), and perhaps she might change her mind. I am referring to the new 55” and 65” UHD (Ultra High Definition) models from Samsung that offer brilliant picture quality and superior upconverting technology, where these will be made available from July 21 onwards.

Samsung’s best-in-class Ultra High-Definition (UHD) TV family has just gotten a couple of new members in the form of the F9000 line. They will arrive in 55” and 65” models as mentioned, where you ought to be able to experience home entertainment at a whole new level with the right kind of media, although you would most probably find that it is not too possible for the ordinary consumer to replicate the audio experience of a movie theater.

The F9000 series will deliver four times the resolution of Full HD TV, assuring that your eyes enjoy a vivid, crystal-clear picture. The F9000 UHD TV makes use of Samsung’s proprietary Quadmatic Picture Engine, where it is a four-step process that includes signal analysis, noise minimization, UHD up-scaling and detail enhancement in order to seamlessly upconvert SD, HD or Full HD content to UHD-level picture quality. Now do not expect magic to happen here, as I am sure that most of us have experienced the DVD upconversion to Full HD resolution which has had varied results in the past. The 55” model will retail for $5,499.99 with the 65” model tipped to go for $7,499.99 a pop.

Samsung announces Series 7 SC770 Touch Monitor and Series 7 SC750 Monitor

by - on July 15th, 2013

Many of us do use computers in our line of work for many hours each day, and apart from having an efficient machine that does our digital bidding in the most practical manner, the monitor, too, plays a big role in ensuring that our eyes do not end up too tired along the way for us to do anything else. Samsung has a couple of new consumer monitors, namely the Series 7 SC770 Touch Monitor as well as the Series 7 SC750 monitor, where the former would happen to be Samsung’s first consumer multi-touch display; while the latter boasts of an ergonomic rotating display.

The Series 7 SC770 Touch Monitor comes with a special touch control that paves the way for 10 points of simultaneous input, making it ideal for dragging, rotating and selecting objects on the monitor, all the while offering a smooth and intuitive touchscreen interaction. This means you do not need to have any additional controllers, and I can testify to the fact that once you have gotten used to a touchscreen monitor in a Windows 8 environment, you would find it strange when you use a computer terminal without a touchscreen as you would inadvertently touch the monitor and wonder why it does not work. Just remember to lay off the pizza and other kinds of oily food along the way if you want to continue working from the existing terminal with the Series 7 SC770 Touch Monitor in tow.

The SC770 also delivers an enriched computing experience, as it can hook up to a mobile device via USB, while Samsung’s Sliding-Tilt function with hinge technology would enable the SC770 to smoothly and conveniently adjust to a 55-degree tilt. This is a 24” Full HD display that sports a narrow bezel with ultra slim depth, accompanied by a clean back and a premium metallic stand, and will retail for $599.99 a pop.

As for the Series 7 SC750 monitor, this puppy will arrive in a slim, ergonomic design which is capable of a 90-degree pivot, while the rotating screen has been optimized for surfing the web, consuming social media content and viewing documents â€" regardless of whether you choose to do so in landscape or portrait modes. You can pick up the Series 7 SC750 in 24” and 27” models for $249 and $379, respectively.

Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear headphones

by - on July 10th, 2013

All headphones are not created equal, we know as much for sure. For one, quality when it comes to headphones is of the utmost priority for many an audiophile, while others who are on another level figure out that quality is not the only criteria to consider â€" it must also look drop dead gorgeous when one wears it. I guess it is this kind of thinking that has led the folks over at Sennheiser to come up with the Momentum On-Ear headphones, which will debut in a palette of fresh, pastel colors which would certainly not look out of place in this fast moving fashionable era.

Through the injection of bright, beautiful color into Sennheiser’s range of headphones, the new Momentum On-Ear has been specially crafted from the finest materials and will arrive in a quartet of colors, where they have been inspired by an international team of design experts and trend scouts. The quartet of colors found the Momentum On-Ear models would be blue, green, pink and ivory, where pastel shades define an emerging trend that deliver a more subtle look which happens to be the direction that current fashion collections are headed towards.

Apart from its visual beauty, you can be sure that comfort, too, is high on the list of priorities for the Sennheiser folk, where it comes with a headband and earpads that have been finished in high-tech Alcantara. Just in case you were left scratching your head wondering what Alcantara is all about, it happens to be a specialized luxury material that is loved by designers and automotive upholsterers alike, preferred for its unique combination of softness, durability, and breathable comfort. These Alcantara earpads are capable of isolating the listener for a great listening experience on the move, never mind that they happen to move through the pressure cooker-like, noisy urban environments. There are lightweight sliders made out of premium brushed stainless steel which complete the high end look.

Ever since the digital camera module was introduced into a smartphone, it was safe to assume that one day, the average dedicated digital camera would suffer a drop in sales, as most folks would just use their smartphone cameras to capture memories wherever they go. The day has not yet arrived, but it is definitely close with the recent announcement of the Nokia Lumia 1020 â€" a smartphone which boasts of a massive 41-megapixel sensor as well as optical image stabilization (OIS) that have surpassed existing benchmarks of smartphone photography. We are talking about unmatched picture detail and quality with an effortless capture, edit and sharing features here.

For starters, Nokia claims that they have reinvented zoom through the combination of their next-generation 41-megapixel sensor, ZEISS optics with half a dozen lenses and OIS. This would allow the Lumia 1020 camera to zoom into the details of every shot, where it over-samples the results so that your digital memories look sharper and clearer than ever before. Since you might be rather new to this digital photography thing, the Lumia 1020 allows you to point and shoot without worrying about missing the moment, as you can, at a later time, reframe the photo thanks to the new Nokia Pro Camera application.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 will support LTE networks where applicable, and it comes with a 4.5” AMOLED WXGA (1280×768) touchscreen display with Corning Gorilla 3 Glass, a 2,000 mAh battery, wireless charging support, a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor, their piece de resistance â€" a PureView 41-megapixel with optical image stabilization with Xenon and LED flash, a 1.2-megapixel front facing camera, 2GB RAM, 32GB of internal memory, 7GB of free SkyDrive cloud storage, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, all crammed into a body that weighs just 158 grams. The Nokia Lumia 1020 will arrive in yellow, white and black colors, shipping to the US on AT&T first this July 26th at $299.99 a pop â€" obviously with a 2-year contract, of course, before making its way to China and Western Europe later this quarter.

Laser Pegs – a Bright Idea in Bulding

by Julie - on July 11th, 2013

My daughter loves building things, it started with those little alphabet blocks, moved on to Legos, and has continued into the virtual world with her all out addiction to Minecraft. Of all the stuff she wastes time with, I find I really don’t mind these kinds of activities, heck.. maybe she’ll become an architect someday.

So whats new in building sets these days? Check out Laser Pegs, an interesting cross between Hasbro’s Lite Brite and Legos. Laser Pegs allow your kids to snap together all kinds of interesting models, that light up with vibrant LED lighting. The idea behind these nifty Laser Pegs is that by having the components made of clear plastic, you can see both the colored LED’s inside, as well as the wiring and little boards and resistors, this not only lights up everything you build, but gives your creations a cool, futuristic look.

There is a free associated app with Laser Pegs, that allows you to look up manuals, or even create, and share instructions on how to duplicate your original designs with other kids, and each set usually makes quite a few different things, in fact the Indy Car pictured above comes with instructions for 60 different projects.

So if you have a kid thats into building, and isn’t quite ready to break out the carpentry tools, Laser Pegs might be a fun alternative to other building sets we’ve had available for eons. Sets range in price from around 25 bucks to 60, and they have an a la carte shopping option on the Laser Pegs website for when you need a very specific  piece, for a special original build out.  Laser Peg sets are available at amazon.com.

Kurio has had it fair share of successes in the past, where the best-selling, award-winning Kurio 7 family tablet is the most recent one in our memories. Well, they have just introduced a spanking new range of Kurio Android-powered devices for families â€" especially those with kids. The models in this new range would be the Kurio Touch 4s which happens to be a 4” handheld device, where the Kurio 7s happens to be a 7” tablet, and the Kurio 10s that will obviously be a 10” tablet that is available exclusively at Toys “R” Us stores around the country.

The new family of Kurio devices are next-generation, Wi-Fi enabled devices that will come with the latest technology (although that is relative, depending on how you approach it), running on the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system, with a comprehensive Kurio proprietary suite of parental controls. Parents need not worry about this Kurio range arriving empty handed, as it will arrive preloaded with tons of free family-friendly content.

It has been said that the Kurio family of products will be the ideal solution for families with kids, where kids will be able to enjoy everything that they have ever wanted in a tablet, and parents too, can heave a sigh of relief knowing that their kids would remain safe in their online activities. Apart from Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, there will also be the inclusion of a multi-core processor, a doubling of its internal storage space to 8GB, as well as enhanced parental controls that will boast of even stronger Internet filtering, additional granular app usage controls, and easier to use time limits â€" all the while being able to maintain up to eight completely separate user profiles.

The Kurio Touch 4s, Kurio 7s tablet and Kurio 10s tablet will retail for $99.99, $149.99, and $249.99, respectively, from August this year onwards â€" except for the Kurio 4s and Kurio 7s which are said to be available at retailers everywhere from September 2013.

ECOROX lets you rock out in the water

by - on June 26th, 2013

Isn’t it amazing to see how far technology has come over the years? Look at your cellphone, then look back at what you had 10 years ago. If you did have a mobile phone, it did little more than simply place and receive calls. Now it can do more functions than your PC, PDA, and another dozen devices combined. Unfortunately, what it still can’t do is survive a quick dunk in the pool. Sure, there are watertight cases, but those tend to impede your ability to do things like listen to music, because the speakers are covered. What you need is a large, portable, waterproof speaker.

The ECOROX is a portable Bluetooth speaker that can not only survive a quick dip in the pool, it can hang out in there, blasting your favorite tunes for hours. This set of 6 watt stereo speakers is housed in a waterproof body, and designed to float beside you. Just pair it with your smartphone sitting safely away from the water, and you can rock out to your favorite tunes without any risk. You’ll even be able to take calls at the press of a button, so you never miss a call.

If swimming isn’t your thing, and you’re more of a biker, this device works for you, too. The ECOROX was designed to be mounted to the handlebars of a bike. Never again will you have to worry about the elements harming your speakers. Of course, you’ll still have to worry about upsetting the people around you, if your music is up too loud as you ride past.

You’re going to get 10 hours of talk or playtime out of each 2.5 hour charge. Recharging is handled by a micro-USB cable, and a standard 3.5mm jack offers compatibility with virtually any audio device. You can purchase your own in black, red, or orange for just $130. You can find a handlebar or suction cup mount on the site for just $10 each, as well.

Coleman Party Grill – Good Times, to Go

by Julie - on July 8th, 2013

With the summer weather upon us everyone’s all jazzed up to get outside, the kids are ready for hikes in the woods, days at the lake and they’re looking for a picnic every single day. We used to carry around a little old charcoal grill for a few hot dogs and hamburgers on the go, but it was messy, and getting the coals put out so the thing could be cleaned and put away was, at the very least, inconvenient.

Well Coleman has taken all the fun of a portable little grill, and none of its nonsense, and packed it into a small, versatile, and very easy to use little party grill that will make a great addition to your next family beach bash, fishing trip or tailgate party. The Coleman Party Grill not only grills up a great hamburger, but it’s flat griddle side is perfect for some bacon and eggs and, because it’s solid, can could even hold a small pot for some soup or pasta.

This portable party grill grill is easy to assemble and no tools are required, simply put it together and connect it to your propane cylinder (sold separately) and when you’re ready to cook, you just fill the well bowl with water, and use your push button InstaStart ignition to get the burner going. Your cooking flame is easily adjustable and the Coleman party grill is completely dishwasher-safe (except for the burner assembly) so after its cool enough, just throw the included lid back on it, and bring it home for a wash.

The Coleman Party Grill sure isn’t going to feed the High School football team, but for a small family outing or a quick and clean alternative to a charcoal fire, I see a lot of outside dining in our future. Check out the Coleman Party Grill at amazon.com, its under 50 bucks.

Potty Monkey – Toilet Training Buddy for Kids

by Julie - on July 7th, 2013

Its been a while since I potty trained my daughter, and from what I can recall it was a rather simple one day event. We told her that big girls go in the potty and that if she wasn’t a big girl and mommy couldn’t teach her to use the toilet, then the “potty patrol” would come to the house and bring her to potty school. Done and done. She used the potty from then on, and before you write letters… we have in fact saved enough money both for college AND the 1000 hours of therapy she will probably need from the whole potty patrol thing.

Think of the savings however, if only we had the Potty Monkey. Forget boring books, dad’s car magazines or newspapers, the Potty Monkey was designed by a pediatric urologist and promises to be a very successful toilet training option. Potty Monkey is comprised of an adorable plush monkey that will talk and educate your child every time he is placed on his tiny flushing toilet and he has a 30 and 90 minute timer to remind your child that it might just be time to GO.

So while I can say with conviction that the “potty patrol” scenario definitely works, the Potty Monkey may just be your better option. The kit comes with 2 books, one for parents to learn all about the mechanics of potty training, and the other, a board book, is all about Potty Monkey and his potty chair and cool new underpants. Potty Monkey is available at Amazon.com for under 30 bucks, which is much, much cheaper than therapy, dont you think?

3D Printed Cast could assist in recovery process

by - on July 5th, 2013

For those of you who have had the unfortunate experience of going through the healing process after breaking one (or more) of your limbs, you would know the uncomfortable feeling you get whenever your hand (or the affected limb) is placed in a cast. These tend to be bulky most of the time, and they also double up as a blank canvas for friends to leave goodwill messages, although some of the more mischievous ones among your circle might just opt to leave embarrassing sketches instead without having to answer for them. The thing is, those are small payoffs for the healing process to ensure that your bone sets properly, while plaster and fiberglass variants also do their job well without costing an arm and a leg, which indirectly results in a whole lot less investment where innovation is concerned. Jake Evill is one to do something about the situation after being saddled with a plaster cast for a few months himself, where the “smelly and itchy plaster” bothered him so much, he decided to think of a solution of his own. Voila! A 3D-printed brace which would now be able to follow the contours of the arm.

This 3D printed brace might remain a concept as at press time, but Evill’s Cortex (as he has called it) might just have an extremely bright future ahead of it, thanks to it being an injury-localized exoskeleton which is not only lightweight, but washable, ventilated and recyclable to boot.

Evill was inspired by nature to churn out this design after doing some research on the human bone, and realized that the trabecular â€" tiny lattice-shaped structures which form the inner tissue of a bone, is the design he had been looking for all this while. Evill said, “It was this honeycomb structure that inspired the Cortex pattern because, as usual, nature has the best answers. This natural shape embodied the qualities of being strong whilst light just like the bone it is protecting within.”

Hopefully this denser, less ventilated material will become more and more mainstream and accepted in medical circles in the future, and when that happens, we own Jake Evill a big round of applause and thanks.

Giant1227 isn’t your ordinary desk lamp

by - on June 25th, 2013

I do a fair bit of drawing and reading, two activities that generally require good lighting. Thus, you’ll find more than a few extra lamps in the various rooms of my house. This is because standard overhead lights either don’t cut it, or provide more light than I need, depending on the situation. My favorite kind of lamp is one attached to an adjustable arm. This is because I can quickly and easily reposition it without much effort. Wouldn’t it be great if larger lamps were this easy to adjust? Well now you can buy one that is.

The Anglepoise Giant1227 Classic Range may look like your average desk lamp, however, it is anything but. In fact, it can’t actually sit on your desk at all(unless you have the desk of a giant, that is). Instead, its shape mimics one that you might see sitting in an office. It uses a set of aluminum bars and springs to keep the beam of light just where you need it.

So how large is this lamp? It is roughly three times the size of its smaller brother. It stands a little over 6.5” tall, and even the lamp shade is about a foot and a half across. For lighting, it comes equipped with a 100 watt halogen reflector bulb, though it can be replaced with any standard bulb. Unlike most similar desk lamps, you’ll find a dimmer, so you can get the lighting just the way you want it.

Now I bet you’re wondering just how much this interesting lamp will set you back. Unfortunately it is priced like an art piece, rather than a simple piece of home décor. You’ll be looking at around $3,500 to get one for yourself. If you do feel like picking one up, you’ll be able to choose from white, black, grey, or red.

Goal Zero Yeti 150 and Yeti 400 Solar Generators ensures you have juice at all times

by - on July 1st, 2013

Sure, many of us have at the bare minimum, one smartphone with us at all times, while others who are more liberal with their wallets have an iPad or tablet device to play around with, not to mention majority of the modern day workforce relying on a notebook or Ultrabook to get their work done on the go. This has certainly led one to think along the lines of ensuring that every single device must be charged the night before so that they have enough juice to last at least throughout the next day. While this is the ideal situation, it does not happen the way you want to all the time, and in the event of an emergency, what are you going to do? This is where the Goal Zero Yeti 150 and Yeti 400 Solar Generators would come in handy, also helping those who want to be prepared for the fast approaching 2013 hurricane season complete their preparations.

The Yeti 400 tips the scales at 29 pounds, and yet it can deliver 400 watt-hours of power, which is the same amount required to juice a smartphone 30 times over, a laptop 5 times, being able to power a TV for 3 hours (although I am quite sure that the brightness level does affect the final count), or even more than 100 hours of light thanks to Goal Zero’s Light-a-Life LED lantern. You can juice up the Yeti 400 from a wall power outlet in a matter of 5 hours, or just like Kal-El, use the sun and wait for 30 hours thanks to the Nomad 27 Solar Panel.

The smaller sized but similarly equipped Yeti 150 Solar Generator will be able to carry enough juice to have it deliver 50 hours of light, 15 smartphone recharges, 6 tablet recharges or 2 laptop recharges, all the while tipping the scales at a relatively lightweight 12 lbs, now how about that? It takes 24 hours under direct sunlight to charge to its maximum capacity, or 5 hours via a wall outlet. You can pick up the Yeti 150 and Yeti 400 Solar Generators for $199.99 and $459.99, respectively.

Satechi Bluetooth Wireless Smart Keypad

by - on July 3rd, 2013

I am quite sure that the seasoned computer user would have seen his or her fair share of Bluetooth accessories by now, and nothing new would really shock them into making a purchase. Well, what is a Bluetooth accessory manufacturer to do, then? Perhaps coming up with something that is essential to one’s work might actually move their hearts as well as wallets, and this is exactly what the folks over at Satechi have done â€" with their spanking new Satechi Bluetooth Wireless Smart Keypad.

The Satechi Bluetooth Wireless Smart Keypad is said to be the perfect functional accessory for any Apple user’s workspace, where it comes in a sleek, metallic silver finish that is so familiar to all Apple hardware owners, and also sports an Apple-styled curved edge design which makes it a sight for sore eyes. You are more or less guaranteed that gifting an Apple user the Satechi Bluetooth Wireless Smart Keypad would not irk them in any way in terms of design, but the crucial question is, do they need it?

That question can only be answered if one were to take stock of what the Satechi Bluetooth Wireless Smart Keypad offers right from the get go. For starters, this accessory will not take up any more valuable USB ports that are available on your machine, and it is also capable of toggling between Calculator Mode and Keypad Mode. When it is in Calculator Mode, the device would work as a normal calculator, performing arithmetic operations, and these would include backspace and memory operations. In Keypad Mode, it will work like any other number pad, so that users are able to type numbers and equations in a quicker and more comfortable manner compared to the traditional linear number layout of laptops and tablets.

Since it is so slim, the compact BT Wireless Smart Keypad would be able to be packed away in a jiffy, as it comes with a large LCD display that can show up to a dozen digits simultaneously, while an LED indicator would let you know whenever it starts to run low of juice. Expect to fork out $34.99 for the Satechi BT Wireless Smart Keypad.

Xentry transforms smartphone into electronic door caller display

by - on June 28th, 2013

There is nothing quite like taking something old and fashioning something new and updated out of it with a little bit of extra help from more modern technology, of course. Case in point, U.S. startup Xavage Technologies has decided to create a new kind of smartphone housing that will work in tandem with an app, and has christened it Xentry. Basically, Xentry is capable of transforming an older generation iPhone or even the Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate into a door-mounted caller-display, letting you check out who is at the door at the moment, while allowing you to communicate with them via using a corresponding app. Since an older smartphone is used here, you need not worry too much that someone is going to steal a spanking new iPhone 5 from literally your doorsteps, which ought to provide some sense of relief to most of us.

Basically, with the Xentry, your old and retired smartphone will be mounted on the inside of your front door, where there will be a customized peephole attachment which replaces an existing peephole lens, letting the phone’s camera to come into play instead, staring out into the corridor so that you know whether your pizza has come a-knockin’.

The “smart door” system will be able to stream real-time video as well as audio thanks to your home Wi-Fi network, so you need not have to fork out extra each month to have a SIM card working in the door-mounted smartphone. Other than that, there is also the ability to disguise your voice whenever you speak to the the caller at the door, with the added functions of door movement detection via the phone’s gyroscope as an added security measure.

Xavage hopes to raise $200,000 using Indiegogo so that the two Xentry models will be able to enter production, with one of those being specially designed to house old iPhones (3GS/4/4S), while the other is meant for the Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate, which was one of the most popular devices Stateside in 2010.

Sceptre SB301524W Speaker Sound Bar 2.1

by - on June 30th, 2013

When someone mentions the name “Sceptre”, what comes into your mind? I am quite sure that many of us are well acquainted with Sceptre’s range of LED TVs that deliver plenty of bang for your hard earned buck, and this has somewhat raised the confidence of the general cost conscious populace in this relative newcomer to the home theater/audio visual arena. This time around, the folks over at Sceptre has something slightly different for us as your eyes would not be the ones entertained, but rather, your auditory canals, in the form of the Sceptre SB301524W Speaker Sound Bar 2.1.

The Sceptre SB301524W Speaker Sound Bar 2.1 will boast of a built-in subwoofer, in addition to being powered by Google’s Android operating system while sporting Wi-Fi connectivity so that your run-of-the-mill HDTV can be “transformed” into a smart TV of sorts, thanks to the wonders of plug and play technology. I suppose the total cost of ownership for a smart TV has now been lowered across the board with this Sceptre offering, although it should not come with a similar level of integrated performance as Samsung or LG’s own range of dedicated Smart TVs. Still, something is better than nothing, right?

With the inclusion of Android’s interactive media operating system, you should be able to take advantage of the perfect entertainment atmosphere, as you are now able to access the Google Play Store, where the doors have been opened for you to download thousands of songs, games, movies and apps to add to your TV viewing experience. Something tells me that Angry Birds are going to see a spike of downloads and installations in the days and weeks ahead, if the Sceptre SB301524W Speaker Sound Bar 2.1 sees a large number of sales.

Features of the $299.99 Sceptre SB301524W Sound Bar 2.include a 35W subwoofer with passive radiator, SRS WOW HD audio technology, dual front facing speakers, a trendy touch sensor control panel, and an optional smart remote control which is capable of offering a navigational experience which is on par with that of a traditional mouse and keyboard. Any one of our dear readers are interested in this bad boy?
