by Julie - on May 30th, 2013

I used to be pretty organized, then I got married, had a child and started collecting stuff. Now it takes me an extra 40 minutes just to get out the door and countless hours trying to keep track of things. Forget taking a vacation, it’s almost too much work, who’s got the camera, the keys, the suitcases? Do you have your phone? Something is always lost or forgotten, is there a way to avoid it?

Well, check out iFi Systems Smart Tags, working like a two way pager between you and your precious stuff. Utilizing a Bluetooth connection and able to be attached to a handbag, camera case, or just about anything else you’d like to protect, these Smart Tags act as a handy reminder that you’ve forgotten something, or worse, your valuables are walking off with an opportunistic thief!

You can attach multiple tags to multiple items and check the status of each one directly from the home screen. You can customize the names, and the alert sounds for each item individually, and you can even monitor battery life via your smartphone. Can’t find the phone you say? Simply use your tag to track it, the communication system works both ways.

iFi Systems Smart Tags come in both iOS and Android models and the associated app can monitor up to 6 different items at a time. You phone will alert you if you and your things are separated by more than 30 feet and will then send you a Google map of where it was at the time of separation. So if you want to keep your belongings safe, primarily from yourself, get some iFi Smart Tags. Around 30 to 35 bucks, depending on your operating system, from iFisystems.com

Western Digital and SanDisk work together on Solid State Hybrid Drives

by - on May 28th, 2013

When it comes to storage space on your computer, a couple of names would definitely stand out â€" for the larger capacity hard drives, you would most probably have one form of Western Digital products lying around, while those who deal with flash based storage might have a slew of SanDisk memory cards lying around somewhere. Well, we are pleased to announce that both Western Digital as well as SanDisk have come together to deliver what they deem to be the world’s thinnest 2.5” Solid State hybrid drive that features best-in-class flash memory technology from SanDisk in addition to best-in-class hard drive technology from Western Digital.

SanDisk would be the supplier of a SanDisk iSSD storage device for the Western Digital Black solid state hybrid drive (SSHD), where it makes use of both Western Digital proprietary hybrid technology and industry standard SATA IO technology. The SanDisk iSSD is there to bring about an elegant balance of performance, low power consumption, cost, reliability, and a compact form factor to this SSHD. In a nutshell, customers will not only get to enjoy ample storage space, but they do not have to sacrifice in terms of style, either.

Kevin Conley, senior vice president and general manager of client storage solutions at SanDisk, said, “I am delighted for SanDisk to team up with WD on these exciting new hybrid products. By combining SanDisk’s unparalleled flash memory expertise and technology with the hard drive know-how of WD, WD Black SSHDs offer outstanding hard drive-like capacity, and the slim form factor and the level of performance that you will only get with flash memory solutions.”

It is said that WD Black SSHDs rely on WD hybrid technology which will blend responsive, intelligent flash memory technology from SanDisk alongside high capacity hard drives from WD, and this particularly powerful combination would greatly improve the PC user experience, where in the end it allows both high capacity and a higher level of performance compared to traditional hard disk drives, and among these characteristics include an increased speed, instant-on and faster application launching.

As I type this, I am sitting in an Airbus A320, cattle class, typing on a Dell XPS 12 and realizing that my arms have hell to pay when I touch down in an hour’s time simply because there is just not enough space to type properly, but work still needs to get done. To make matters more uncomfortable as they already are at the moment, there are a couple of ladies in the opposite row who have not stopped yakking â€" and yakking loudly, too, for the past hour. Who would have thought that they have so much to talk about, in addition to letting the rest of the world know of their family issues and problems? This is where the Shure SE846 sound isolating earphone would certainly come to my aid.

The Shure SE846 sound isolating earphone sports a patent pending design that boasts of a low pass filter in order to deliver a true subwoofer experience, even when you are on the go. MSI does it again with new GX70 and GX60 gaming laptops

by - on May 24th, 2013

I do not know about you, but for me, a gaming notebook is a poor (an extremely poor one at that) substitute for a full fledged gaming desktop. After all, you do not have the luxury of a really large display for your eyes to enjoy superb visuals, not to mention the kind of audio that is pumped out from your notebook speakers tend to be lame â€" very. Of course, if you are a gaming addict, then at any time that you need to get that gaming fix of yours going, a gaming notebook would be the ideal solution. After all, something is better than nothing at all, right? MSI certainly knows that they have a couple of models in the market that will appeal to the masses, and they are the new MSI GX70 and the GX60.

These are armed with the AMD A10-5750M processor, and will have the Radeon HD 8970M graphics and Killer Game Networking card to accompany the notebook for a totally enthralling gaming experience on the go. In fact, the new and refreshed MSI GX70 and GX60 notebooks would also be the first AMD Richland A10-5750M powered gaming notebooks in the world.

We are looking at an increase in visual performance by up to 40% over previous generations, and not only that, the new processor will also increase battery life and CPU performance, which results in longer gaming sessions alongside a crisper, brighter and a more realistic visual experience. The MSI GX70 will be the higher end model between the two, where it also sports AMD’s Eyefinity 3D technology which enables users to run multiple independent display outputs at once, while the Killer E2200 Game Networking card will theoretically eliminate lag time and a full color backlit SteelSeries Gaming Keyboard to get it going. Not only that, THX speakers with a built-in subwoofer are there for an ear thumping experience. Unlike just about all Ultrabooks in the market today, these two models will arrive with Blu-ray disc readers, a 1920×1080 full HD anti-reflective display and a 9 cell battery for extended mobile gaming pleasure. No idea on pricing or availability just yet though.

Das Keyboard Quiet Mechanical Keyboard

by - on May 21st, 2013

For those of you who tend to do a whole lot of typing in your line of work, surely you would know that there is nothing quite like a responsive keyboard with fantastic tactile feedback. Having said that, those projected keyboards are novelty devices that are unable to beat the real deal when it comes to churning out those reports as requested by the upper management. Single folks can just give this particular story the once over, or skip it altogether as they do not have to deal with typing in bed or in the bedroom while your partner is doing his or her darndest best to fall asleep. What you need is definitely something that works great as a keyboard, but is whisper quiet. The candidate to fill this pair of shoes would be the new Das Keyboard Quiet Mechanical Keyboard.

With the introduction of the Das Keyboard Quiet Mechanical Keyboard, it would mean that Das Keyboard’s popular range of high-performance mechanical keyboards has just gained another family member, where it is said to be able to reduce audible feedback to a minimum without sacrificing on performance. In fact, it claims to deliver one of the best tactile experiences. This latest newest member of the Das Keyboard family will boast of Cherry MX Red key switches that are combined with a new Quiet Key Design. In a nutshell, it would require far less force to actuate keys, where we are looking at 45g instead of 55g to 60g for majority of the keyboards out there, and users would then end up with a softer, more tactile and “whisper quiet” typing experience.

Romanian teenager advances self-driving car idea

by - on May 20th, 2013

Ionut Budisteanu of Romania certainly does seem to have a pretty bright future ahead of him, especially after he picked up the top prize at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which so happens to be the largest high school science research competition in the world. This would mean that Ionut Budisteanu managed to earn the Gordon E. Moore Award, in addition to a $75,000 prize that was named in honor of the Intel co-founder and fellow scientist. According to the organizers of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, “Their research demonstrates the value of hard work and creative thinking. All the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair finalists here this week show great promise in harnessing the power of science and innovation to solve problems and create opportunity for our global community.” Just what made Ionut’s work so valuable? Well, he manages to address a major global issue by potentially reducing the cost of a self-driving car dramatically, so much so that it could make such technology affordable to the mainstream folks.

Thanks to an array of 3-D radar and mounted cameras, Ionut has successfully created a feasible design for an autonomously controlled car which is smart enough to detect traffic lanes and curbs, in addition to keeping track of the real-time position of the car. The best part of the news is? The entire shebang would cost a mere $4,000, which is a whole lot more affordable that what Google is currently using in their self driving car project.

Ionut decided that processing webcam imagery using artificial intelligence technology to check out items like curbs, lane markers, and who knows, soccer balls which so happen to go out of the field of play and roll onto the road, would be able to eliminate the need for a high end 3D radar, resulting in the use of a low-resolution 3-D radar to get the job done when it comes to recognizing large objects such as other vehicles, houses, and obstacles like trees. Ionut ran 50 simulations with his system, where in 47 of them, no accidents were recorded. Three of the simulations that failed involved the non-recognition of people who were 65 to 100 feet (20 to 30 meters) away, and a slightly higher-resolution 3-D radar should get the job done down the road.

Gigabyte U2142 convertible Ultrabook announced

by - on April 28th, 2013

When it comes to Ultrabooks, there are dime a dozen models to choose from out there. Of course, the more expensive models would feature just pure SSD memory for the storage space, in addition to a high powered Core i7 processor from Intel with a fantastic looking chassis to boot, made out of nothing but premium material. Well, some of the more established names when it comes to the Ultrabook market would be Samsung, Lenovo, HP, Dell, and Acer, but with Gigabyte who is not so established, it is nice to see them make the jump into the Ultrabook market with the Gigabyte U2142. Thing is, the Gigabyte U2142 will not be any ordinary Ultrabook, as it is a convertible model with more than decent specifications located right underneath the hood.

For starters, the Gigabyte U2142 convertible Ultrabook would come with a multi-touch 11.6 “display to take advantage of the Windows 8 operating system, while sporting a dual storage system that would certainly mean far more storage space compared to just featuring an SSD alone. Another interesting aspect of the Gigabyte U2142 would be the swiveling hinge which allows you to turn it into a tablet as and when the situation calls for it. While this is not exactly the newest idea in the market, at least it offers you the flexibility of carrying both a tablet or an Ultrabook in a single device. Lenovo’s famous swiveling hinge has made its mark a long time ago, and to see a resemblance of it in a Gigabyte device, it is definitely interesting.

The Gigabyte U2142 would tip the scales at 1.39 kg, and measures 20mm thin, sporting the third generation Intel Core processor, with a display resolution of 1366 x 768 with multi-touch capabilities, a maximum RAM count of 16GB, and the choice of a SSD 256mSATA SSD and a 1TB HDD. Depending on the model that you pick, the Gigabyte U2142 would retail from €949 to €1,099 where its starting price is concerned.

Self Balancing Electric Unicycle

by - on May 18th, 2013

Since Father’s Day is around the corner (all right, so it is sometime in June, but it never hurts to be prepared in advance) and you are sick and tired of thinking of the perfect gift as dad already has numerous ties, shoes, vests, cufflinks, belts, and leather wallets. Is there nothing out of the ordinary that you can give dad to bring a smile to his face? A luxury watch might be a good idea, but it is not unique. Enter the $2,700 Self Balancing Electric Unicycle, where you might have visions of grandeur of Tony Stark’s briefcase suit, as this is a briefcase-sized electric unicycle which allows one to be perfectly balanced at all times thanks to the help of gyroscopic sensors.

The Self Balancing Electric Unicycle is suited for both urban commuting as well as suburban recreation, where all you need to do is just to stand on its two folding feet pads. The integrated gyroscopic sensors will be able to detect a rider’s subtle feet movements, all the while taking into consideration a shoulder-slung backpack or bag for its center-of-mass calculations. All you need to do is grip the handlebar and lean forward, resulting in a steady acceleration without jolting, and if you want to slow down or stop, just lean backward.

Turning is a snap, where you control it with side-to-side balance and turn around with subtle leaning. The unicycle will be powered by a 500-watt electric motor that can propel a 160-lb. rider up to 13 mph for two hours, and it will take a three-hour charge to juice up its integrated lithium ion rechargeable battery. It certainly seems like a dream ride to have, and I do wonder about the requirements to ride this in public. Urban commuters would definitely find this to be a boon, especially when your destination is just a few blocks down the road.

Wish Pearl – Harvest a Real Pearl, without Getting Wet!

by Julie - on May 17th, 2013

I always held true to the old adage that tells us it’s the thought that counts, but that being said, I’ve had a lot of great thoughts… but they’re not at all better than getting some extravagant present. However, when I cant afford extravagance I like to go for something so unique or bizarre that the recipient exclaims “where did you find that!?” Hence my family has some pretty weird stuff.

My daughter must have my genes because for my birthday I got a Wish Pearl, sounds simple enough, if it werent for the fact that you make your own pearl necklace from a pearl you harvest yourself, out of a mullousk-in-a-can. Yes its true, with no guarantees as to pearl color or size, you simply make a wish, then dig your pearl from the long dead (however well preserved in alcohol) oyster ,and the can warns you not to eat the oyster or drink the liquid it comes in. Thank goodness for that, as I had my cocktail sauce at the ready.

After following the instructions I was able to retrieve my pearl from its animal home and learn what meaning its color revealed by the information on the box. Also included in the kit is a beautiful 18K white Gold tone plated Flower shape “cage” to house your pearl with an 18k white gold tone plated necklace thats about 18″ long. Simply pop in your newly harvested pearl and voila! a beautiful necklace.

So I love my little pearl necklace and I love that my daughter took the time to find something fun and interesting to get me, and its going to last a whole lot longer, and cause a lot less pain than the 5 pound box of chocolates she got me last year! There are several different kits to choose from, all for under 20 bucks at amazon.com

by - on May 14th, 2013

French company Archos has had their fair share of Android-powered devices in the past, and this time around, it is no different with the introduction of the new ChefPad. Just what kind of hardware do you think we are able to find underneath the hood of the Archos ChefPad? For starters, there is a dual-core 1.6GHz processor that will be accompanied by a quad-core graphics processor, not to mention having the flexibility of capturing self-portraits with the front facing camera and a back facing camera, too, as both of them weigh in at 2-megapixels. Full HD (1080p) video playback is also supported, while you will be able to enjyo direct access to thousands of apps, videos, and music to cook by thanks to the ChefPad’s compatibility with Google Play.

This will be an exclusive app program that curates the best of all apps from Google Play regardless of the category, making it a whole lot easier for the end user to discover the most suitable content. Other hardware specifications include 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal memory that can be expanded via a microSD memory card slot, Wi-Fi connectivity and a mini HDMI connector. Any takers for the Archos ChefPad?

Tom Dixon’s new watches under the Eclectic Collection

by - on May 13th, 2013

I think that the world is divided into two different groups â€" one that purchases watches as a practical device to tell the current time, while the other group would be one that picks up watches as a form of investment. You know for sure that one loves to invest in watches if you come across someone who truly believes in Patek Philippe’s marketing slant that one does not merely own a Patek Philippe, but rather, looks after it for the next generation. Well, if you do not have the kind of fat bank account to purchase luxury watches for keepsake and hopefully sell them off at a far higher price sometime down the road, then you would do well to check out the new range of watches from Tom Dixon under the Eclectic Collection, and the name of the collection itself is epitomized by the kind of timepieces which were rolled out.

The trio of new watches that were designed by Tom Dixon is extremely unique, due to the fact that each item has been crafted from honest, resilient and heavyweight materials including copper, marble, cast iron, and wood among others. Clearly inspired by British heritage, Tom Dixon has a penchant for choosing his products very carefully, and the Block Watches this time around intend to add an air of excitement to the collection â€" in addition to value, of course.

The Square Case itself has been stamped from a block of pure stainless steel, using the most minimal of components and yet having a great impact with the assuredness that heads will turn your way whenever you wear one of his timepieces. After all, the square case is a surefire method of attracting attention thanks to its unusual look, with Swiss movement within to make it as reliable as possible. All numerals on the dial have been deep etched, and they remain clearly visible to boot, while the dial itself is encased within a crystal face for clear visibility and protection simultaneously. If you are on the lookout for a truly unique timepiece, then you will not go too wrong with Tom Dixon’s offerings.

IntelliGender – Know Before you Go

by Julie - on May 8th, 2013

When I was pregnant I was fairly certain I was having a boy. Being a tomboy myself, I was convinced my body wasn’t actually capable of producing a girl. Later, I found out it’s the dad that determines the sex of the child, and after the 37th viewing of Cinderella, and 168 tea parties with obligatory manicures, I guess I was as wrong as I’ve ever been, about anything…ever.

To save others from the yellow rooms and  green pajamas normally purchased for babies of yet unknown gender, I introduce to you, the IntelliGender Gender Prediction Test Kit, the first easy to use, at home gender prediction kit made for curious moms.

Boasting up to a 90% accuracy rate, the IntelliGender Gender Prediction Test is a simple urine test that can be performed as early as 10 weeks into your pregnancy, and it can provide you with clear and easy to read results in as little as 10 minutes. Using first morning urine and a proprietary mix of chemicals that react with hormones in your body, you can be selecting paint shades in lovely pink or blue in no time.

So if you’re not the type to wait for a surprise, or you’re simply looking for a cute activity for your baby shower, the IntelliGender Kit may be fun for you. Remember, the test can be (and often is) wrong, so maybe keep your receipts for the 4 pack of pink onesies. Available at amazon.com for under 36 bucks.

by Julie - on May 9th, 2013

Zombies have been around for an awfully long time, but I’m not exactly sure when these guys made it to the “popular” table. Everywhere I look I’m reminded of the pending Zombie apocalypse. So I have food and water saved, a goodly supply of Zombie stopper bullets and am strongly considering a moat around my house… what else can I do?

How about Zombie bowling? Assuming actual zombie heads won’t be readily available in the coming months, I can still satisfy the primal urge to include a beloved zombie in my life with a new Zombie Head Bowling Ball. No longer will I bowl in obscurity, when I arrive with my Zombie Head in hand, the leagues will take notice.

Each of these polyester, high gloss finish balls comes with a disturbingly awesome, extremely detailed zombie depiction, complete with blood, copious amounts of ooze, and vacant staring, as well as neatly marked finger hole placements that are strategically located in, or near, nostrils, eyes or mouths! Very nice.

Easier to deal with than your average zombie head, these gruesome balls come with a 2 year warranty, and are available in sizes 10, 12, 14, 15 and 16… and while I have to admit that I haven’t been bowling since I was 12, I desperately want a Zombie Head Bowling Ball and if you want to add some “life” to your game, check out  amazon.com but please, don’t rent the shoes… cause then you’ll have the feet of the undead too. Prices start around 90 bucks.

Nokia Asha 501 announced

by - on May 10th, 2013

Finnish phone manufacturer has yet another device released, but this time around, it will not be on the high end side of things considering how it will not run on the Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system. In fact, this will be a feature phone, but does that mean the new Nokia Asha 501 does not deserve any kind of news coverage? That would be anathema to me â€" at least, as Nokia intends to position the Nokia Asha 501 to break down plenty of barriers and smash people’s expectations of just how much ‘smartphone’ that their hard earned money is able to buy.

First of all, let us get this out of the way â€" the Nokia Asha 501 might not be a smartphone, but this does not mean that folks who pick one up are going to lose out on touchscreen goodness. No sir, you will find the Nokia Asha 501 capable of delivering the full touchscreen experience, complete with social networks, content sharing and connectivity that has been deeply integrated into a wonderful, responsive and revamped operating system.

It will be compatible with the GSM 900/1800 + WLAN and GSM 850/1900 + WLAN bands, falling back on the Nokia Asha platform user interface, but this will not come with a dual SIM slot. There is a 3” QVGA TFT capacitive display to get things going with your fingers, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and I am quite sure the 128MB of internal memory is far from sufficient in this day and age â€" which is why the engineers over at Nokia has decided to throw in a memory card slot that is expandable up to 32GB, if you get the right MMC card, of course. Other connectivity options include Micro USB, a 3.5mm AV jack, and a 2mm charger connector.

The Asha 501 will come in bright red, bright green, cyan, yellow, white and black colors, where each purchase will be accompanied by a pair of red headphones right out of the box. It costs $99 a pop from Q2 onwards.

AL13 iPhone bumper

by - on May 5th, 2013

So, you have just gotten yourself a spanking new iPhone, and would want to do all that you can to ensure that it looks as pristine as possible? If that is the case, then you might want to check out the AL13 iPhone bumper, where it offers protection without adding on to the bulk. Of course, there is also the issue of cost, where higher quality bumpers are concerned, but is it not nice to see someone think of the average person who does not have that much disposable income, and yet want to obtain quality at a minimal price? This is where the AL13 iPhone bumper, where it has been specially designed to offer protection for the iPhone without having to change its look. It was first launched launched as a successful Kickstarter campaign, and today the AL13 is available for purchase online.

The person behind the AL13 said, “The iPhone is elegant just as it is; the beauty of its design stands out so we want to preserve it. The AL13 is created from Aerospace grade aluminum, so you get a slim, lightweight frame that’s tough enough to shield your iPhone from bumps and scratches yet elegant enough to blend perfectly with the iPhone’s form.”

Having already surpassed its funding goal of $20,000 on Kickstarter in February 2013 with total pledges hitting a cool $86,250, it is nice to take note that 100% of the Kickstarter backer’s orders were delivered on time. This is definitely a rarity, especially when you consider how 84% of Kickstarter’s top projects are shipped late â€" or at least, that is what CNN.com says.

The AL13 works this way â€" it will raise the iPhone away from surfaces that protects the edges and absorbs the shock from bumps and knocks. There is also the presence of a rubber lining which functions as a shock absorber to minimize impact damage, while protecting the iPhone while installing the AL13. This is a high impact, anti-scratch, anti-fingerprint and anti-glare polyurethane screen protector which ensures (or at least it does its very best) to keep your screen in pristine condition. The slide cover will simply glide on and locks into place, all done without the need for any screws or tools.

The AL13 will boast of models for the iPhone 4, 4s and 5, where it will come in Slate Black, Gun Metal, Silver, Red and Blue shades for $79.99 a pop.

Microsoft Research comes up with interactive work badge ID

by - on May 2nd, 2013

Microsoft Research Cambridge’s Steve Hodges and his group of colleagues over at the Sensors and Devices group have been spending their time working on novel sensing technologies in addition to new devices which would make life easier for ordinary folk to interact with computer systems and digital content. Hmmm, this does seem to sound suspiciously like a new foray into the world of touchscreens, or has someone reinvented the reliable keyboard and mouse combination? Apparently not, as they are currently working on something that they have dubbed, “An Interactive Belt-worn Badge with a Retractable String-based Input Mechanism”, which was presented at the Association for Computing Machinery’s 2013 SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.

Hodges said, “We interact with digital content more and moreâ€"such as electronic diaries, emails, traffic status, and weather info. But even if you have your mobile phone in your pocket, it can be a pain to interact with this content in many cases. The badge is always on hand and lets you navigate to the content you want simply by moving it to the right place relative to your body, using your spatial muscle memory. It’s much easier for quick ‘snacking’ on small amounts of digital content.”

What you see above is the lightweight, interactive badge prototype in the flesh, and as you can notice, it would come with an embedded LCD display which will show off dynamic information to the wearer, instead of the usual work badge ID that always carries your worse mugshot ever, in addition to other nitty gritty such as your work position and department among other details. This one is very different, as it boasts of sensing-based input capabilities that have been integrated within the badge’s retractable string, paving the way for single-hand interaction. Of course, plenty of work still needs to be done, especially when it comes to the design and form factor, but I am quite sure that these are challenges that the team would relish, and we hope to see a commercial solution sooner rather than later.

Mace Pepper Gun – Packing Heat!

by Julie - on April 30th, 2013

I worry about personal safety, not so much for myself, but for my little girl. She’s only 10 now so I’m with her most of the time, but someday she’ll be off to the mall, or worse… off to college and all alone. *sniff* I don’t know how I’m gonna handle it, but it would be easier if I knew how to make her safer.

I’m hoping that some strides will have been made in personal safety products by then, but in the meantime check out the Mace Pepper Gun. Touted as one of the most accurate defense sprays around, the Mace Pepper Gun utilizes a replaceable, bag-in-a-can cartridge that allows users to spray a constant stream of liquid agony, well over 20 feet. The Mace Pepper Gun also employs a trigger activated LED light that not only lets you see who you’re aiming at, but may in fact blind, or disorient the attacker before you even get a chance to shoot him in the face!

Of course the Mace Pepper Gun has a safe/fire mechanism that should prevent you, or someone you love from accidentally discharging the pepper spray on themselves and the chemical cartridges are easily replaced when they are empty. Each Mace Pepper Gun comes complete with batteries, a 28 Gram OC cartridge, as well as a water cartridge, so you can test-fire your gun and become familiar with how it works, well before the need arises.

So if you’d like a little portable protection, that seems a whole lot less scary than an actual firearm, head over to amazon.com and look at the Mace Pepper Gun, it’s only around 40 bucks and comes in 2 different shades of blue, as well as pink or silver. Go ahead, make my day!
